- Got my third request from the insane mumbling person, this time requesting, of all the songs in the universe, "Hatred (A Duet)" from the Kinks' extremely unsuccessful 1993 album Phobia. I did the best I could, as you can see.

- No human DJ was there either before or after my show, thanks to the Union closing at 5:30 for spring break, so I stayed until 9:30. This would ordinarily be a cause for sadness, since when you're coming on to follow up dead air you can have absolute certainty that nobody could possibly be listening to the first half hour of your show. But now that we have the automator it's not so bad.

- Both record players now have the slightly less severe problem that the left channel sometimes fades in and out. This made the Blue Aeroplanes song sound terrible, so I'll have to repeat it next week.

- "Bottle of Smoke" turned out to have about 20 cuss words in it, so maybe it's good that practically nobody but me was on the Pitt campus at the time to hear it.

- Last 3 songs are all good "last songs". Last.fm told me that #2 and #15 would be good choices.

- I liked the contrast between #15 and #16 as the light and serious sides of "new wave".

- #28 and #29 were recorded in the studio of Bobby DiMonte of Vōg fame.

23. The Gun Club - Preaching the Blues - Fire of Love 1981
24. Jazz Butcher Conspiracy - She's on Drugs - Cult of the Basement 1990

- At least four regular listeners listening today! Three of whom requested something (7; 12; and 13, although what was actually requested was "Stargazer").

- This was a very good show, which is odd for a show that begins with three songs I'd never played before and contains 10 songs I'd never heard before. The Algebra Suicide song is absolutely great and much more accessible than anything else on that album or on the two EPs that are known to me.

- "Preaching the Blues" was much better than "Sex Beat", in my opinion.

25. Essential Logic - Moontown - Fanfare in the Garden (1980)
26. Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments - Cheater's Heaven - Bait and Switch 1995

Turntables not working again! Intense disgust with the situation leading to a relaxing of the rules and the playing of songs from not one but THREE decades other than the eighties, given that about 95% of the things I wanted to play were on vinyl and thus unplayable. The other two things were the two versions of "Frankie and Johnny" recorded 78 years apart by a fellow born in the 1880s and a lass born in the 1980s. This emergency situation necessitated the use of the Kill Rock Stars anthologies for Liliput, Essential Logic, and Delta 5.

The other saving grace was the discovery of "Sugar Kane" which is now probably my favorite Sonic Youth song. Also, I hadn't heard "Lonely" in forever.

Talking Heads and Joy Division songs were at the request of Melissa who wanted to know what they sounded like. Somehow this is the first time I've ever played Joy Division.

February 12

This week a basketball game preempted my show, which was lucky because I was on a plane back from Banff and couldn't have done the show anyway. Now that I think about it, that really is lucky. Somehow it hasn't been preempted by a basketball game all semester, except at the time when I couldn't do it anyway.

24. Bright Eyes - Haligh, Haligh, A Lie, Haligh - Fevers and Mirrors 2002
25. Soft Cell - Down in the Subway - This Last Night In Sodom 1984

Melissa wanted to hear some Smiths songs.

Bright Eyes and "Marian" were requests. Somehow I never thought to look for Sisters of Mercy albums before, but we have one early one. Someone requested "Tainted Love", but I was forced to play "Down in the Subway" instead, which is a very similar song in many ways but is faster and therefore probably better objectively though less singalongable.

The Classic Brown was a request by someone who appeared to be a member of The Classic Brown. I played it because it's actually in our automator and was in our rotation, and thus it's not a CD that came to us unsolicited and was placed in the discard bin after a hearty "LOL WTF THIS SUX" from our music director. It turned out to be really good, actually, resembling the Throwing Muses song I was then inspired to play.

Finally got to play the Flying Lizards.

Played the Bad Religion song mainly because it provided a great lead-in to the Pogues song.

25. R.E.M. - I Believe - Lifes Rich Pageant 1986
26. Surgery - Your Beautiful Smile - Trim, 9th Ward High Roller EP 1993

Turntables not working today for two different reasons, making the Game Theory song sound bad and the Feelies song sound absolutely awful. Hence, a few songs from the early 1990s. Good that we have all those Sonic Youth and Wedding Present CDs, and that we just got a 2-CD R.E.M. set called "And I Feel Fine: The I.R.S. Years".

Not a great show, and I don't think anyone was listening. High point was playing Scritti Politti's incredibly original début single.

- Hunter didn't come in to do the metal show after mine, so I played a couple new songs before telling the metal robot to do the metal show.

- More Tin Huey - that band was really something interesting.

- #5 speaks for itself. Perhaps the best Wilkes-Barre-based comedic prog-rock band of the mid-80s.

- "Angel Visit" is a song I liked as a little kid. Yes, I watched 120 Minutes as a little kid. My dad went through a phase of being fascinated by the art form of the independent music video.

- Good combo of intensely rocking R.E.M. songs, although I screwed up the attempt to segue between them. Next week play "King of Birds" (had completely forgotten about that song until today).

- 20 and 21 are equally rocking but the juxtaposition shows you how much the Pogues evolved from their improperly punky beginnings.

- 23 was a request by Kelly.

- Two people requested Jefferson Airplane, both in annoying ways. The second guy then requested Poison, followed by Pat Benatar. I decided "Kids In America" was the closest thing to Pat Benatar I could find.

- Saw no need to play Ken Nordine because we'd listened to the entire Colors album on a trip back from Michigan on Sunday. He will be back next show.

Annoying development today. We are now required to type everything in all caps with underscores between words instead of spaces.

Good show though. Mostly rocking. Ken Nordine.

Show is now preceded by Melissa's post-rock show. It used to be preceded by Melissa's formatless show, but now she has a format.

When Melissa heard the Pogues she told me to play the Flogging Molly song. Then when she heard "Looking From a Hilltop" she told me to play the Broadcast song. "Looking From a Hilltop" is really amazingly un-dated for an electro-pop song from 1984.

21 and 22 were actually recorded in 1980 or 1983 or something.

End of year

December 18 I was very busy and the union wasn't open anyway. I suppose I could have taken a daytime slot, since everyone else had finals.

December 25 I wasn't here; w00t and so forth.

January 1 I had gotten back in time for my show but the union wasn't open.

- Bright Light Fever is probably in rotation - I have to see what sort of rotation it's in.

November 27

Couldn't do the show today because my car broke down and I couldn't get back to Pittsburgh in time. It needed a new idle air control valve and a new motor mount.

I guess getting it fixed there was probably cheaper than getting it fixed in Pgh would have been.

- 17 was a request after Mr. McWade heard 13.

- This show was all good songs, but maybe too eclectic. And yet, I didn't perform the ultimate act of ridiculousness, going directly from TAD to the Wee Papa Girl Rappers. There was a bunch of talk and promos between those two.

- 22, 23 and 24 was a set of bands I had never heard of at all.

- Heard the Feelies for the first time.

"Little Rough Rhinestone" is really a fascinatingly weird song.

Also, I think "Non-alignment Pact" will be the theme song from now on.
Points in its favor:
- It is short
- I own it on CD, more convenient than vinyl
- It is at the beginning of its album, suggesting that it was intended to begin things such as albums and radio shows
- It begins with a gradual accumulation of noise, which I can talk over, sounding better than just talking over silence
- It is by a famous band
- It is not boring
- It is from the beginning of the eighties/post-punk era

The request for Oxo's "Whirly Girl" came in again. I can understand how one would be nostalgic about it, after seeing this. His second choice was Talking Heads, so I played two songs spanning their career.

Matt Pond PA was a request too.

Finally played "Pollution Woman"!

Songs 9 and 10 are the best attempt I've made so far to discover the two least compatible songs in music history.

26. The Waitresses - No Guilt - Wasn't Tomorrow Wonderful? 1982
27. Megadeth - These Boots Were Made For Walkin' - Dudes OST 1987

Pretty great show today. Just about every kind of music, including several songs I'd never heard before, and a couple that weren't that good but context made them great.

Decided to play "Red Elephant", the most sincere song ever recorded, as penance for playing W.A.S.P.

Cucumbers and Blue Aeroplanes got positive responses.

A request came in for "Electric Dreams", by Giorgio Moroder and P.P. Arnold. At least I think it's by P.P. Arnold - David said that didn't sound right. At any rate, we don't have the soundtrack to the film Electric Dreams, and I don't know where else to find it. But while looking for the Electric Dreams soundtrack, I found the soundtrack to another movie I'd never heard of, which contained Megadeth's particularly Megadesque cover of "These Boots". Excellent, I must look through those compilations more often.

28. Throwing Muses - Not Too Soon - The Real Ramona 1991
29. The dB's - A Spy In The House Of Love - Like This 1984

- 19 and 25 were chosen by Hip Hop Trainee Brian. I tried to make them fit in as little as possible for enhanced interestingness. Also I brought out what I believe is our only 80's hip hop, the M/A/R/R/S "Pump Up The Volume" 12", but it turned out to be warped.

- The Kinks and "Friday I'm In Love" were requests.

- I always enjoy playing "Not Too Soon" partially because it's the last song Tanya Donnelly recorded with the band, released on an album that I think came out after she left the Throwing Muses to form Belly, which is why it sounds exactly like a Belly song. It questions the notion of ownership yada yada yada authorship of whatever. Also, it rules.

Trainee Kyle picked 7, 10, 13 and 20. Zerbe requested 17, although I didn't realize until later that it was a request for a specific song (not "Gouge Away") instead of the entire album. A caller requested "Tainted Love", but I thought she would like "Down in the Subway" just as well, which she did. Also, she requested Chicago, which somehow we don't have, despite our many Styx and Nazareth and Ringo Starr and Suzi Quatro and Asia albums.

Also, I plan to play "Stool Pigeon" at least once a show for the next two and a half years. I hope you're prepared.

Good but weird show today. Trainee Dan picked 4, 10, 15, 21, 22, 26, and the decision to end with Jamiroquai. "Rock Lobster" was requested, but it wasn't on any of our three B-52's albums, so we played "Private Idaho". "Everyday I Write The Book" (or something by Oxo) was requested, but it wasn't on any of our eleven Elvis Costello albums, so I played two songs which should add up to be roughly as good. Also, I'd never heard of an R.E.M. version of that song before.

27. Section 25 - Crazy Wisdom - 12" single 1985

- #22 was a request from an obviously insane person who mumbled into the phone nonstop for a couple minutes...I deciphered the phrases "Jefferson Airplane", "Woodstock", "West Homestead", and "Appreciate it", and told him I didn't think we had anything by the Jefferson Airplane because thanks to decades of theft we basically have the bizarro music collection (we have about five times as many albums by the Tubes as we have by the Rolling Stones, for example. And that's considering that we actually have more than one album by the Rolling Stones. The only thing we have by the Beatles is a burned copy of that "Number Ones Collection" album that came out about five years ago.) Anyway, I noticed this bootleg-looking Jefferson Airplane thing that had clearly been in the vinyl stacks for the full 37 years since it was released, and it turned out to be a cool live album.

- Finally played Braille Party, who I'd been meaning to play forever. The same is true for the Vapors album track.
- Also, got to see what Thelonious Monster was like. And the Aztec Camera Van Halen cover was tremendous. So was the Chameleons song.

Found out what Drivin' n' Cryin' sound like -- and investigated Delta 5, Killing Joke, and A Flock of Seagulls after reading Rip it Up and Start Again.

Dead Milkmen was a request (his first choice was "Pleasure and Pain" by the Divinyls which we do not have).
